Training

In the i-FAB, university and executive students compete in assembling table football sets "learning by doing". The assembly line is organised according to lean logic and is designed to demonstrate the benefits that digital technologies can bring to operations management and to provide a concrete example of a smart factory.

Factory

i-FAB is equipped with some of the most advanced automation solutions and information collection and analysis systems. In the workshop, the nine pillars of the Industry 4.0 plan are brought together, tested and thoroughly understood according to a functional logic of plant design, monitoring, control and continuous improvement.

Research

i-FAB allows researchers, university students and companies to test the latest innovations and search for the best applications in manufacturing, with the aim of making a concrete contribution to the 4.0 development of the Italian industrial context, combining the potential of university research and the real needs of manufacturing companies.

Training

University and executive training courses are provided within the i-FAB, following the principle of "learning by doing". Students simulate the production process of assembling table football, on a 1:1 scale, working in a team and covering various typical factory roles (operator, logistician, maintenance technician, time and method analyst, department head, ...).
During the i-FAB classes, students strengthen their skills in terms of Lean Manufacturing, Industry 4.0 and Soft Skills.

Within the production context of table football assembly students set themselves the goal of making the i-FAB a Lean factory, through the practical application of Lean techniques for achieving stability (e.g. 5S and standard work), improving quality towards the goal of 0 defects (e.g. Poka Yoke) and time efficiency in compliance with takt time (e.g. Yamazumi, Lean Layout). Thanks to the workshop simulation environment, students can put into practice the theoretical concepts learned in class and learn from their mistakes and successes in a protected, risk-free environment.

Students analyse the main critical issues in the production context of table football assembly and identify the potential of the most innovative technologies, evaluating the costs and benefits of implementing each of them. Thanks to the lab simulation environment, students can to test the technologies within the i-FAB factory, develop ad-hoc systems for its needs and objectives, and learn about the benefits and main implementation challenges.

Students enhance their "soft" skills by working in teams to transform the i-FAB into a Lean and/or 4.0 factory. The entire class of students is actively involved in change and everyone's ideas are listened to and considered. This enables the students, with the guidance and supervision of the lecturers, to develop their skills in team-working, attentive listening, effective communication and negotiation. They must aim to find a solution to a number of critical issues that are tailored to enhance problem solving, planning and work organisation within a short timeframe and considering the needs of the work group.

All university and executive courses taught at i-FAB allow students to get involved in these fundamental aspects and prepare them for change management in factories.

Factory

Inside the i-FAB, students experience first-hand the benefits that the various Lean techniques and the 9 pillars of industry 4.0 bring to production processes. By conducting a real gemba walk, they experience the solutions adopted to bring line balance, reduce assembly time as well as highlight equipment failures and/or product non-quality in good time. They are able to understand not only the benefits that can be gained from applying these paradigms, but also the path that needs to be taken to achieve a 4.0 transformation.

The i-FAB is a protected place, where mistakes are allowed and, where it is also possible to replicate problems in the company in order to analyse every single aspect and find the best solution, without ever having to interrupt the production flow. This is why many companies choose i-FAB as their partner: to find 4.0 solutions to the difficulties they encounter in their production process, and/or to use the knowledge and applications developed at i-FAB to introduce lean techniques and industry 4.0 technologies into their production.

Research

Empirical research activities can be carried out in the i-FAB, allowing LIUC - Cattaneo University students and researchers to use the laboratory for technology experimentation in a realistic and safe simulation environment.

LIUC students enrolled in the Master's Degree in Management Engineering and the Doctorate in Management, Finance and Accounting have the opportunity to carry out research activities within the i-FAB laboratory, often in collaboration with local companies, in order to develop their thesis work on Industry 4.0 and Smart Factory topics, experimenting i-FAB technologies and thus contributing to the digitisation and innovation needs of the Italian manufacturing context through research.

Research fellows, researchers and professors at LIUC - Cattaneo University support this research and present the results in seminars and workshops dedicated to companies in order to spread knowledge and increase skills in manufacturing, using feedback from the industrial world to start new research activities.
